The Sankofa symbol originates from the Akan people of West Africa and carries profound meaning. In the Akan language, "Sankofa" is expressed as "se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki," as documented in The Adinkra Dictionary (Willis, 1998).
The literal translation of Sankofa is "it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot." This concept is embodied by a mythical bird that stands with its feet firmly facing forward while its head is turned backward, holding an egg in its mouth symbolizing the future. The wisdom encapsulated in this symbol teaches us the importance of learning from the past, which serves as a foundation for building a strong future. It signifies that it is never too late to change course and embark on a new path.
This philosophy aligns perfectly with our motto: "Reclaiming our past provides us with valuable knowledge to protect our future while understanding and shifting our present condition." We firmly believe that by reclaiming our history, acknowledging the lessons it offers, and understanding how it shapes our present circumstances, we gain valuable insights to safeguard and shape a better future. It underscores the significance of preserving and honoring our heritage while actively working towards positive change in the present. Through embracing the principles of Sankofa, we empower ourselves to create a brighter and more informed future.
