The Sankofa symbol is from the Akan people of West Africa. “Sankofa” is expressed in the Akan language as “se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki.” - The Adinkra Dictionary (Willis, 1998)
Literally translated, this means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot”. It is expressed as a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. It is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future. It also means that it is never too late to turn around and start on a new path.
This ties with our motto: “Reclaiming our past provides us with valuable knowledge to protect our future while understanding and shifting our present condition.”
