EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. During trauma, our brain processes and stores memories incorrectly and that can lead to past memories feeling very present. Related or unrelated actions in the present can lead to people reacting as they did at the time of trauma. The brain feels as if the past painful event is happening currently.


EMDR therapy corrects this mis-storage so that the painful memories associated with the trauma lose their intense power. The person can then respond to things in the present without past experiences interfering.

Sankofa Art is a therapy group conducted inside Philadelphia's county jail for women. The group provides a space for incarcerated women to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem. A key goal of the program is to improve or restore the participant’s sense of pers

Sankofa Art is a therapy group conducted inside Philadelphia's county jail for women. The group provides a space for incarcerated women to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem. A key goal of the program is to improve or restore the participant’s sense of personal wellbeing. It is important to note that this isn't an art lesson although various art techniques may be taught. Instead, art is used as a form of expression. The program is built on the six core principles of trauma-informed care which include collaboration & empowerment, and resilience & recovery.
